ZX NU

Post by Admin » Wed Apr 24, 2019 8:15 am

The ZX NU was designed by the German ZX Team. Its a modern take on the original ZX 81 without the need for the ULA. The operating system can switch between two ROMS, data storage via a memory stick/VDrive , 128K EEPROM memory, composite video output and a (not so essential) four character onboard LED.

I have already built one of these devices with all options included and am running it with ZX81 and H4th ROMs. My only regret is that I didnt document the build, but that is about to change as I have a second PCB.

The ZX 81 ROM is very stable and fantastic to use. Loading and saving are a joy with a short and logical command syntax. The H4th ROM proved more troublesome on my version, the initial menu screen would corrupt and fade, the display was offset and there were bugs and freezes. Thanks to Oli and ZX Heinz from the ZX Team, all the problems have been resolved and the H4th ROM is now very nice to use.

Over the coming weeks, I will post the build progress below in words and pictures. Progress may be a little stop/start as I am unsure what components I'll need to buy.

And the first step completed, with sockets and some resistors in....

Just the DC regulator, video socket and inductors to add.

After that the power can be connected and checks made for shorts etc.
